Weeks 02-07 of 2016

2016 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

Week #2 – Black & White

Week 02, 2016 - Black and White: Test your boundaries
Week 02, 2016 – Black and White: Test your boundaries

I love black and white but it doesn’t seem to love me in return. I always get these wonderful (at least to me) shots but never in the week that I want them to. For this week, I finally settled on this because I simply liked it best. It is not the strongest image ever but I still like all the symbolic elements.

Week #3 – Greetings from…

Week 03, 2016 - Greetings from...: Hyderabadi city life
Week 03, 2016 – Greetings from…: Hyderabadi city life

How do I effectively capture the story of ‘greetings from…’? I live in a busy city in India where there thousands of stories that could have been used through images of architecture, culture, landscapes and so forth. However, for this week I liked this image best – there’s clutter and colour, people, vehicles and food, religion and daily lives… Welcome to Hyderabad, Telangana, India

Week #4 – Shoot from below

Week 04, 2016 - Shoot from below: Tropical winter tales
Week 04, 2016 – Shoot from below: Tropical winter tales

From this crop you cant tell that I was looking up at least 70 degrees to get this image. I really did shoot from below – looking up! This tree is really a favourite of mine and I like that I was able to get some colours in this shot and not have it be a complete silhouette…

Week #5 – Shoot from above

Week 05, 2016 - Shoot from above: Abandoned
Week 05, 2016 – Shoot from above: Abandoned

The next obvious challenge was to look down. I think the photograph effectively displayed it this week. I could have gone for a better shot but I wanted to use this one – nature taking back what was once her own. The way the bicycle is almost buried in the drying grass just appealed to me…

Week #6 – Levitation (NOT)

Week 06, 2016: Street Vending
Week 06, 2016: Street Vending

So, I suck at levitation and for some reason  I wasn’t motivated to try this challenge this week. Instead I used an image of one of my favourite things in India – street food! 🙂

Week #7 – (Leading) Lines

Week 07, 2016 - Lines: Natural lines
Week 07, 2016 – Lines: Natural lines

When Mother Nature decides to help you with a challenge, even though you only have your phone on you, you accept it! The coloured versions were pretty but I like the moodiness of the black and white shot more.

Who am I?

2015 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

Week 38 – My Personality

Week 38 - 2015 Project 52 - shadows and light, colours and tears
Week 38 – 2015 Project 52 – shadows and light, colours and tears

One of the worst things ever is to ask me to talk about myself. I have a lot of information to share but for some reason, quite ironic really, I can’t get the meaning across. This week’s challenge was interesting indeed as we were asked to take one picture that gives an idea of our personalities – without featuring people as an extra challenge. To me, there are so many complex aspects of my personality, thus, this was not easy.

I remember a conversation with a then PhD student in 2009. We were on the roof of my hostel in the evening time and as the sun set and twilight turned to night we were having an interesting discussion. It was based on the question, “WHO am I?” Every attempt we made to define who we were placed us in some box that society has created. In the end we realised that to say nothing would be the best way to describe ourselves as the possibilities are endless and we don’t place restrictions on ourselves. Up to this day, I still can’t answer that question yet I have a much deeper understanding after that conversation.

Coming back to this photography project of mine, in the end, I thought this image from a recent road trip summed it up enough. Why? SOME of the reasons why I chose this image are briefly stated below:

  • Life
  • Colours
  • Shadows
  • Darkness
  • Budding flower
  • Tears
  • Disguised ‘sharpness’
  • Macro

That’s about it… 🙂

Back to base…

2015 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

I didn’t want the vacation to end but we can’t always get what we want – life doesn’t work like that. Also, when you’re going through a variety of different experiences in life at the same time, some areas of your life don’t warrant as much focus as others.

Looking back on my photographs for Project 52/52Frames of this year so far, I see that this has happened too often. Weeks 06, 07, 08, 19, 23 and 24 were basically ‘let’s just get an image that might work with the theme for this week.’ Sometimes I forgot about the challenge and had to do a last minute rush to keep with the deadline, to keep in the game. For example, weeks  05, 17 and 25 show this.

However, on the up side, all of these challenges that I faced (and will undoubtedly face in the future) only make me want to try harder…

Having said that, I present to you:

Week 23 – Focus

Week 23 - 2015 Project 52 - be you
Week 23 – 2015 Project 52 – be you

Yes, this was a bit of a ‘hurried shot’ and I deliberately switched the ‘meaning’ of the theme for the week. Sometimes I like to do that and see what I come up with. In this case, I think it’s important to remember to follow your dreams in life. Don’t follow someone else’s dreams for you…

Week 24 – Transportation

Week 24 - 2015 Project 52 - two wheelers
Week 24 – 2015 Project 52 – two wheelers

A week stuck indoors because of a terrible heatwave resulted in a chance shot. It fits the description but that’s about it. I would have loved to get one in motion and not parked. I did the square crop – I don’t think it worked out that greatly – to get rid of some clutter I didn’t see when taking the picture (it was hot!). Also, looking back, I would have moved a bit to the right to separate the bike from the tree trunk. However, not too shabby either… I hope. 🙂

Vacation mode – ON!

2015 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

At the end of a semester, or after completing a significant amount of work, we need to take some much needed relaxation! I was lucky enough to have friends in Malaysia, a mere four hours flight away from where I study, who offered me a place to relax in a different environment. It might come as a surprise that I was barely able to hold on to this photography challenge. Some might argue that I’m on vacation so I should have time to work on my photography; I argue differently… who has time to ‘work’ when vacation mode has been switched ON?! However, I was able to hang in there for the couple weeks.

Week 20 – Single Light

Week 20 - 2015 Project 52 - island living
Week 20 – 2015 Project 52 – island living

I wasn’t even aware of the theme for this week but I lucked out as I took a lot of pictures one afternoon from the beach. I always liked silhouettes and variety of subjects available were amazing. I had people and boats and people rowing boats… However, this one was my favourites as it has a sense of action coupled with peace.

Week 21 – Architecture

Week 21 - 2015 Project 52 - flight cage
Week 21 – 2015 Project 52 – flight cage

There is a wide variety of gorgeous architecture in Malaysia, especially Johor and Kuala Lampur. However, the former zoo volunteer in me felt like this juxtaposition of man-made vs. naturally constructed architectures my choice. It didn’t hurt that there were so many beautiful green trees around either. This is the top of a flight cage at the Johor Zoo.

Week 22 – Advertisement

Week 22 - 2015 Project 52 - conservation
Week 22 – 2015 Project 52 – conservation

Did I mention that I’m an animal lover? I’m not sure what others did this week from 52Frames, but I wasn’t thinking about the theme as I took this image. I didn’t even choose the image for this week until I got back from vacation. However, when I saw the theme, my mind came to this specific image as I spent a vast amount of time just observing this mom and her baby at Batu Caves, Malaysia. I didn’t use any text on it as I wanted it to speak for itself. I think it would make a good image for ‘conservation’ based public service advertisements.

That’s about it from my weeks as a lazy tourist who barely kept up with 2015 Project 52!

Playing Catch Up – Pt 1

2014 – Project 52 – Weeks Fifteen – Nineteen

I took a bit of a hiatus due to work but then it was difficult to start back. I’m going to take some baby steps now so that I can get back in to the trend of blogging. Therefore, I decided to get my backed up posts from Project 52, 2014 done in two posts. Enjoy…

Week 15: Apr 09 - Apr 15 Title: Scarlet Flower Location: Home, ECD
Week 15: Apr 09 – Apr 15
Title: Scarlet Flower
Location: Home, ECD

This was the week of flowers. My friends said that I’m allowed one flower post for the year. Thus, I chose my favourite one – my scarlet flower. I’ve bee enchanted with this flower since I was a little girl after reading a story about it. My father then got the flower and planted it in our yard and since then it has thrived. I love the beauty of the flower and the fact that it has thorns – symbolic in a way.

Week 16: Apr 16 - Apr 22 Title: Man's 'footprint' Location: Orangestein, East Coast Essequibo, Gyuana
Week 16: Apr 16 – Apr 22
Title: Man’s ‘footprint’
Location: Orangestein, East Coast Essequibo, Gyuana

Things are not always as nice as they appear and photographers are normally seen as ‘focusing on the beauty’ instead of the upsetting, ugly, etc. Therefore, this week I choose to focus on how destructive men are. This is a branch with litter from the Atlantic Ocean wrapped around it. It’s really sad to think that all this trash came from the waterways and that people could care less about the disposal.

Week 17: Apr 23 - Apr 29 Title:... Location: Berbice Coast *somewhere*, Guyana
Week 17: Apr 23 – Apr 29
Title:…
Location: Berbice Coast *somewhere*, Guyana

Week Seventeen saw one of my better images for the year so far (or so I believe). I was on a photowalk with some friends in Berbice, Guyana. On the way back, I was determined to get a picture of the green fields we kept passing all day. It just so happens  that, after walking for a minute away from where the group was on one stop, I saw the dilapidated fence and a kiskadee on it. It wasn’t easy to get the shot as it was the end of the day, I was tired and the bird kept moving…

Week 18: Apr 30 - May 06 Title: Sonu Nigam Location: Guyana National Stadium, EBD, Guyana
Week 18: Apr 30 – May 06
Title: Sonu Nigam
Location: Guyana National Stadium, EBD, Guyana

Event photography isn’t easy – especially the kind where there is a stage with multiple revolving lights, smoke machines and artistes that are not staying in one location. Considering the above mentioned challenges and where I was sitting and the fact that it was night time, I think I did okay for this week. Being able to experience Sonu Nigam in concert with his band was a great experience – my mom and I danced, even in the rain!

Week 19: May 07 - May 13 Title: 9 Day Joy Location: Cummings Lodge, ECD, Guyana
Week 19: May 07 – May 13
Title: 9 Day Joy
Location: Cummings Lodge, ECD, Guyana

Finally, closing off this ‘catching up’ blog post, I present to you a baby. There are multiple images of sweet, happy babies out there  there that’s not always the reality. Thus, I present to you something a bit more realistic… 🙂
