Symbolism – Destroy, Create, Repeat…

2016 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

Week #14 – Negative Space

Week 14 - Negative Space: Nataraja, The Cosmic Dancer
Week 14 – Negative Space: Nataraja, The Cosmic Dancer

This was another week where I didn’t feel like going outside to do any photography but, yet again, I managed to get something to fit the theme.

A bit of background: Nataraja is Lord Shiva in his Cosmic Dancer form (Lord Shiva is one representation of the Holy Trinity of Hinduism – Shiva is the The Destroyer of the Trinity)

I used many ‘negatives’ in this image – quite a lot them are symbolic to me due to the problems on my University at present. However, this is not the space for politics but for my love of art (photography in particular) and the way it lets me express myself. So, my many takes on the ‘negative space’:

  • I used a dark idol as opposed to one in brass or silver or gold or any other metal..
  • This form of the idol is known as the Destroyer
  • Dance is being used to destroy a world filled with so many negative energies and make space for a new world to be created
  • There are places for light as well as darkness  in this image – however there is use of ‘neutral spaces’ to highlight both

This might not be the BEST representation of negative space in photography, but I used this week’s theme as a more symbolic means this week.

Colours and Patterns

Week #8 – Complementary Colours

Week 08 - Complementary Colours: Getting dressed
Week 08 – Complementary Colours: Getting dressed

I’ve always loved the ‘sari’ (traditional dress of India). The variety of ways that we can tie one and establish so many different looks is quite amazing! However, one of the things I love the most about this dress is the details that can be found on one. For this week I chose to highlight some of the design work on one of my sari blouses while using the colours red and green to set it off. Yes, once again, the colours are not the focus for this challenge but background…

Week #9 – Patterns

Week 09 - Patterns - Constrictor
Week 09 – Patterns: Constrictor

I have a love for nature and while on a walk with a friend found a lot in ‘nautre’. Some were more apparent than others. However, this was my favourite as the setting sun gave me such beautiful lighting.

52 weeks of me!

2016 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

Week #1 – Self-portrait

Week 01, 2016 - Finding a balance
Week 01, 2016 – Self-portrait: Finding a balance

As is the custom, the first week of this challenge is to do a ‘self-portrait’. I’ve done a couple of these over the years but I always manage to hold a bit back. This is a favourite challenge of mine as it really makes me think about ‘who I am’ and try to represent this in one image.

Most people who now me would say that I’m a bubbly person, full of life – happy, optimistic, easy going, friendly… all those ‘sunshiny’ qualities. However, I do have a dark side that I tend to capture in self-portraits. It’s not pessimistic but it is a deep, contemplative side that embraces a darkness that might be troubling to some.

This year, I’m willing to crash through barriers and just discover who I am… Consider every image I take a ‘self-portrait’ in some way or another. Happy 2016 all!!!

…2015 Project 52 completed!

2015 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

I did complete the year – I did take at least a picture a week with some thought into it besides a simple ‘point and shoot’ image. I totally missed it with uploading the images and updating the blog. However, considering the year I’ve had, I think I still did pretty okay to  keep it going.

You can find the remaining eight images below. I’m just going to let those speak for themselves…

Rules, sound and flashbacks…

2015 – Project 52 / 52Frames / A Picture a Week Challenge

Week 39 – Break the Rules

Week 39 - 2015 Project 52 - Fashion Photography
Week 39 – 2015 Project 52 – Fashion Photography

This week challenged us to ‘break the rules’. I’m still learning the rules/guidelines in photography. However, I took a different view of the theme. Normally, at a fashion show, people would get images of the models and the clothes on display. I wanted a ‘behind the scene’ kind of understanding. I love how the model is moving towards the lights and the photographers are lined up at the end of the ‘ramp’.

Week 40 – Sound

Week 40 - 2015 Project 52 - Rush
Week 40 – 2015 Project 52 – Rush

This was a bit of a coincidence – I didn’t now the theme for this week but was involved in some audio editing work. When I saw the theme I knew I’d want to use this particular image. Yes, it features sound and the whole play on the word ‘snickers’ is also there. However, I also went for a less obvious meaning: these are candy bars and candy bars give energy (a sugar rush?) which is necessary to make sound…

Week 41 – Famous… ah who?

Week 41 - 2015 Project 52 - Message from the past
Week 41 – 2015 Project 52 – Message from the past

I have nothing to fit this theme really. I don’t do a lot of research on famous photographs and who took them. If you showed me an image and asked me who took it – no matter how famous – the odds are that I wouldn’t know who the photographer is. So, instead I used an image that had some meaning for me…

A butterfly (or moth in this case) landing on a person tends to bring good tidings. When we are constantly visited by them in a time period it is a belief that our ancestors are visiting… I just found it sweet that this little fella wanted to hang out with me for a bit.
