Mashramani – iz we ting dat!

2014  – Project 52 – Week Eight

On February 23, Guyanese celebrate something called – Mashramani. It’s an Amerindian word that means ‘celebration after hard work’. Traditionally, it was a time to relax and just enjoy the day. However, over the years, it has turned into Guyana’s version of carnival. There’s a road march parade and multiple competitions nation wide.

Week 08: Feb 19 - Feb 25 Title: Mashramani Location: Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, Guyana
Week 08: Feb 19 – Feb 25
Title: Mashramani
Location: Lusignan, ECD, Guyana

It would have been very easy to get a  typical Mashramani type picture, however, I fell in love with this image. To me, it truly captures the spirit of this festival – happiness, unguarded, uncontrolled, simple…Happiness.

This was taken at the IBE’s Annual Mashramani Concert where I was fortunate enough to be a judge. The humour is a result of Anaconda Man (Mark Batson) serenading one of the teachers of the school during a special item.

The other pictures I liked for week eight also came from this school’s concert:
